THE PANTOGRAPH PUNCH

Our Story

Our Story

Since 2010, we’ve been publishing punchy arts and cultural commentary in Aotearoa New Zealand, from personal essays to criticism and reviews to interviews and analysis. We also (when we have capacity) drop special projects like internships and development initiatives, workshops, podcasts, videos and unique live events.

We believe in providing a nurturing space for the next generation of writers, and in championing voices and perspectives that have historically been marginalised. What sets us apart from other platforms is our supportive editorial process, with our writers receiving feedback and mentoring as they develop their pieces. Most importantly, we are committed to honouring our obligations to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. If you believe in the work we do, become a Pal!

Our kaupapa is to offer a platform for a wide range of experiences, ideas, and voices – including talented emerging writers. Please see our Submit page if you have an idea to pitch, or head to Our Team page to find our more about us. We’d love to hear from you.

Thanks to our supporters – and in particular, Creative New Zealand – we offer editorial support and payment to all our contributing writers.

The Pantograph Punch was founded in 2011 (well, late 2010) by Rosabel Tan, Matt Harnett, and Joe Nunweek. It has grown into a vital independent online magazine dedicated to publishing the most incisive cultural commentary in Aotearoa.
