Mokonui-a-rangi Smith

Kaituhi Tūtahi | Contributing Writer

Mokonui-a-rangi Smith (Te Arawa, Tainui, Takitimu, Horouta) is a tā moko artist reviving traditional Māori hand tools known as uhi. The work made with the tools draws on traditional and contemporary aesthetics, ancestral values and modern hygiene. Moko aims to keep furthering the art form through his practice, enabling it to flourish and be handed down to future generations. After training under his mentors Croc Coulter and Inia Taylor, Moko established Uhi Tapu Studio at Corban Estate Arts Centre. His work has been documented by Whakaata Māori, the New Zealand Herald, Newshub, Viva, Vice and other major outlets.
