This month’s Unmissables takes us off the beaten track and into some fun, innovative and politically charged spaces.

February’s team of art critics, Lucinda Bennett, Lana Lopesi and Natasha Matila-Smith, have searched the city to find the best art on show in the parks, homes and galleries of Tāmaki Makaurau.

Everything is sad and funny and nothing is anything else. Eamonn Marra’s debut novel, 2000ft Above Worry Level, sold out of copies at its launch at Unity Books on Thursday. Equal parts neurotic and numb, it is a series of stories about a young man who is trying so hard to be better.

FAT, an exhibition at South Auckland gallery Vunilagi Vou, confronts fatphobia through art.

It was just my five-year-old daughter and me at home when she shouted to me in the kitchen from the lounge. “I’m so fat!” “What did you say?” I replied. “I’m so fat!” Hearing her say those three words triggered instant tears.
